Robert Shaw is a professional landscape photographer who lives in the heart of the land of Lincoln. While studying at Illinois State University in 1979, Shaw developed a passion for photographing landscapes using film cameras. Shaw received degrees in Geography, Geology, and Industrial Technology from Illinois State University in 1982 and after additional study in photography and darkroom, he began working as a photographer professionally in 1986.
Over the last 25 years, Robert Shaw’s landscape images from across the United States have been widely published and displayed. Shaw worked with large and medium format film cameras for over twenty years prior to moving to digital cameras. Most landscape images in his first two books were made with 4x5 view cameras. All the images in Abraham Lincoln Traveled This Way were made using high resolution digital cameras.
Shaw started Wild Perceptions Publishing, a calendar and card publishing company in 1997. Wild Perceptions produces both for national and regional companies, along with calendars available at retail stores. Shaw also produces calendars and other printed works for organizations, recently, a calendar entitled America’s Lincoln Heritage for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum in Springfield, Illinois.
Shaw’s first book Illinois — Seasons of Light, a collection of natural history images from his home state of Illinois, was published by Cache River Press. His second book Windy City Wild — Chicago’s Natural Wonders, was published by Chicago Review Press. Shaw’s photography has also been published in books by National Geographic Books and Abrams Books.
Robert Shaw’s photography has been featured on the covers and inside Four Score and Seven (Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum quarterly magazine), Outdoor Photographer, The Nature Conservancy, Midwest Streams & Trails, Illinois Audubon, Illinois Steward (University of Illinois), Outdoor Illinois (Illinois Dept of Natural Resources), and American Park Network’s Illinois state parks and national park magazines.
