"What a magical book!  This ingenious juxtaposition of stunning photographs, handwritten entries, and narrative text allows the reader to walk side by side with Abraham Lincoln from the Sangamon River to New Salem, from Springfield to Washington, from the battlefields to the Lincoln Memorial. It is an absolute treasure for all those who revere Lincoln, love history, and enjoy award winning photography."
“The book is simply amazing. The combination of the gorgeous images and the handwritten words is so moving, more than either the words or the images alone would be.”
—Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer and winner of the Lincoln Prize.

“Two notable features distinguish this book.  The principal events of Abraham Lincoln's life are succinctly rendered in Michael Burlingame's narrative, and our ability to visualize many of these scenes and their settings is greatly enhanced by Robert Shaw's extraordinary photographs.”
— Dr. Douglas L. Wilson; Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of English and Co-director of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College, author of several acclaimed books on Lincoln, and two-time recipient of the Lincoln Prize.

“This splendid book has it all—beautiful photographs by Robert Shaw of the places where Lincoln lived, worked, and traveled during the fifty-six years of his life, a readable biography by Michael Burlingame, and facsimile reproductions of Lincoln's own writings scattered throughout.  The combination works wonderfully as a narrative of Lincoln's life and a guide to the traveler who wishes to walk in his footsteps.”
— Dr. James M. McPherson; Professor Emeritus of United States History at Princeton University, author of several acclaimed books on the Civil War and Lincoln, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and two-time recipient of the Lincoln Prize.

“You have produced a masterpiece.”, “His latest book, Abraham Lincoln Traveled This Way — The America Lincoln Knew, is simply a unique, priceless jewel of colorful scenes, plus authentic, informative narration contributed by the renown Professor Michael Burlingame of the University of Illinois at Springfield.
This photographic biography of Lincoln is the best to be had with nearly all the captions carefully reproduced in the subject’s own handwriting taken from his own manuscripts. Acquire it, study it minutely many times and lay it on your coffee table for guests to puruse and then envy your astounding literary possession.”
—Dr. Wayne C. Temple, Chief Deputy Director, Illinois States Archives, historian and Lincoln scholar who has authored several acclaimed books, along with numerous publications on Abraham Lincoln.

Dear Mr. Shaw,
I can’t believe I am writing a fan letter for a book, but here goes. I loved, loved your new book “Abraham Lincoln Traveled This Way”. It was one of the best designed books I have ever seen (and I have seen a lot of books). I picked it up to look at the pictures and ended up reading every word. I especially liked the use of the shaded area for the narrative, the Lincoln script for the quotes and the photographs on every page. The design was just wonderful.
This book deserves wide marketing. It would appeal to people all over the United States. I don’t know the book publishing business as you do, but in my opinion it should be widely reviewed and distributed.
It was good to see you at Wild Birds (book signing) in Normal. I purchased the book for the Lexington Public Library and I don’t think I’ve seen it since we put it out to circulate. In my 40 plus years as a librarian, I have been exposed to thousands of books, and your’s is one of the best.
